Annual Lighting Trends & Tech Review with Forecasts for the Next Decade

The lighting profession is changing more rapidly than most practitioners can fully grasp or adapt to. Artificial intelligence, electrification, cybersecurity, decarbonization, renewable energy sources, sustainable design, and the biological impacts of light have increased the complexity of our work. This evaluation of what has changed in the past year as well as defensible projections about what is coming, based on multiple sources and reports, helps us to better serve our customers and prepare for our future in our lighting community. If you have any doubt about attending, please ask your colleagues who attended last year’s update about the value they received.

In the past year Mark has participated in MIT, Intersec and other technology events, written extensively on lighting trends and presented at major industry events including Light & Building in Germany and Lighting Middle East in Dubai. Mark serves as a judge for multiple international lighting awards including product and architectural design competitions. He is active on committees with unique industry perspectives including ASHRAE, IEEE, NLB, IECC, ANSI/NEMA, DarkSky, IUVA and the Illuminating Engineering Society.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will learn the significant changes occurring in the lighting industry during the past year.
  2. Attendees will better understand the latest trends and technologies affecting the lighting community.
  3. Attendees will gain an understanding of the potential for new lighting trends and technologies are poised to impact them in the next decade.

This presentation will be approved for (1.0) IES CEU & (1.0) AIA LU-HSW

Mark has designed interior and exterior lighting systems for a wide range of applications including residential, municipal, retail, healthcare, energy saving retrofits and both conventional and nuclear power plants.  Mark has provided lighting education while working, presenting, and teaching across four continents. He serves on over twenty lighting related committees including ASHRAE, ANSI, IEEE, IUVA, IDA and the IES. As a part of his work, he monitors over 100 lighting related organizations.

Mark is a columnist for Lighting Design and Application Magazine writing on the changes in our industry and he hosts a podcast on lighting trends and technologies.  Mark ran the educational centers for both Cooper and Hubbell Lighting and was the Director of Government & Industry Relations for OSRAM SYLVANIA before joining the Illuminating Engineering Society.
