REVEALING ARCHITECTURE AT NIGHT – Saving the lit facade from extinction

Description:
Is façade lighting and the lit skyline approaching extinction? What does the future hold? Will the modern culture of sustainability results in the end of our lit skyline? Architecture informs and shapes a city’s skyline, and lighting of these buildings helps to create an identity and culture in a city. As we all know, however, this “Architecture of the Night” is the target of many organizations in the pursuit of energy, wildlife, and night sky conservation. How do we save façade lighting from extinction?

This seminar will discuss the future of the city skyline at night. We will look at the history of how we lit building exteriors and transition to addressing the common issues of lighting buildings and architecture in the modern age. We will discuss the common issues we all face when lighting buildings and structures as we move toward sustainability.
