Both commercial and novice growers are recognizing the benefits of growing plants and vegetables using custom tuned horticultural lighting equipment. While HID lighting equipment has been, and continues to be a popular light source for the grow environment for many years, LED lighting equipment has advanced significantly and offers additional flexibility and advantages. With these advancements, LEDs are quickly making their presence known to the Horticultural grow market, making selecting the appropriate lighting increasingly complicated. This session will explore the fundamental differences between Horticultural lighting equipment and lighting equipment intended for general lighting application. We will also spend time discussing the safety requirements specified in UL’s standard for Horticultural lighting equipment and the performance characteristics for this specialized lighting equipment.

We have survived the LED storm of the decade, but it’s not over yet.
The lighting industry is under reconstruction, including everything from testing and measurement to fixture construction and procurement. The evolution gives us unprecedented choice, but not without new challenges.
This seminar tells the LED story: past, present, and future. Topics include new methods of assessing colour, taming the technical beast, the power of materials, and sole sourcing.
Case studies will examine how to restructure the approach to design and procurement to suit the new reality, and how much more expansive and complex LED lighting is still becoming.
Learning Points
- To grasp the challenges of working with progressive LED technology
- To be inspired to turn the challenges into opportunities to raise the bar of design
- To appreciate the value and benefits of leveraging available technology
- To understand the changing paradigm of the lighting business, from manufacturing through design to installation, to improve design and construction processes
- Through case studies, to see how innovative design can be grounded in reality and meet budget.

Like your favorite TV series that shifts to a new time slot, the IES Annual Conference is on the move. The conference now takes place during the summer, the 2018 event slated for August 9-11 at the Westin Boston Waterfront, in Boston, MA.
As always, professional education is paramount. Lighting professionals will have their choice of various CEU credits through participation at the conference.
CONFERENCE SCOPE
The IES Street & Area Lighting Conference is the only conference of its kind dedicated to improving the outdoor lighting business of electric utilities and energy service companies. We continue to provide an open forum for end-users facing the same questions regarding relevant products for specific application, lighting controls, bench marks from other users in the lighting community, and milestones reached by municipalities, utilities and DOT’s. We strive to maintain a small community feel, creating a great opportunity to network with industry peers through seminars with speaker Q+A, breakout sessions to discuss issues in-depth, an exhibit hall and many networking events with speakers and peers in a comfortable and open atmosphere.
PROFILE OF ATTENDEES
Our attendee base, over 900 and growing, includes managers, technical and marketing specialists, lighting consultants and engineers from electric utilities, municipalities, cooperatives, energy service companies and manufacturers. These outdoor lighting professionals come from across the country and the industry. All are vitally interested in learning about products and services and include decision-makers from investor-owned regulated electric utilities, unregulated marketing affiliates, cooperatives, municipal utilities and independent contractors and consultants.
