December Technical Luncheon

Acoustics and Lighting: What is Fact or Fiction?

Date: Wednesday, December 16th 2020
Time: 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Fee: Free
Accreditation: This webinar is AIA approved.

Description:
In this presentation, we offer an overview of how the behavior of sound in architectural spaces can affect us as human beings, and we look into the principals of sound absorption and strategies used to mitigate excessive noise. We scrutinize the systems and units being used to evaluate sound absorption, and we examine the relevance of the NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) rating. Lastly, we put into question some of the ways acoustic luminaires are being tested and address the challenges of comparing luminaires in the absence of regulatory requirements.

Learning objectives

  1. Achieve an understanding of how sound absorption is determined by a number of factors in an enclosed environment.
  2. Examine the system being offered to measure sound and what to look for or be wary of in sound calculations.
  3. Understand the challenges that come with testing and comparing two luminaires.
  4. Looking into the benefits of sound mitigation to improve human performance.

Presenters:
Michael Simla, B.Eng. – Chief Technology Officer, Lumenwerx
Janine Mighton, LC, MIES – Marketing Strategist, Lumenwerx

Michael Simla is the Chief Technology Officer at Lumenwerx. After he graduated from McGill University with a degree in mechanical engineering, Michael began his professional lighting career with a components manufacturer. As he immersed himself in the discipline and honed his skills, he caught the attention of the soon to be founder of Lumenwerx, Morris Feldman. In 2014, Michael joined the Lumenwerx team at the helm of the Technology division.

Michael’s innovative spirit has contributed greatly to the success of Lumenwerx, which has since been recognized with numerous product awards and accolades. In 2018, Michael was identified as one of the IALD’s celebrated 40 under 40 talents. Beyond his professional pursuits, Michael enjoys the challenges of long-distance running. He successfully completed the Boston Marathon in 2018.

Janine Mighton is the Marketing Strategist at Lumenwerx. Although she began her lighting career as a designer in 2001, she moved to the manufacturing side in 2007 where her interest in the industry grew even stronger. Janine works with several teams in an effort to bring forth relevant and strategic solutions for both product development and intelligent marketing programs. She is extremely passionate and inspired, enjoying a career punctuated by several awards in multiple sectors of the lighting industry, from product design to sales and marketing.

Both Michael and Janine were part of the Lumenwerx team that earned a highly coveted 2020 Red Dot Design Award for Product Design, not to mention a 2020 Product Innovation Award (PIA) for Audia, an acoustic luminaire.

Webinar: Concepts for Creativity and Cohesiveness in Lighting Design
Jan 20 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

IES Section WebinarFee: Free (Virtual on ZOOM)

Description:
This presentation will share how designers use concepts for creativity and cohesiveness in their designs. Do you understand strategies to create a design concept? Do you know how that concept can inspire your design solution? Are you bored with the same old solutions? Do you want to put some more spark in your lighting game? A creative concept can provide the inspiration you need to create cohesive lighting designs and augment your work. Come join us to learn strategies for conceiving creative concepts.

Jeanne’s network and collaboration opportunities through IES has been amazing and she can’t wait to share creative concepts from her students, her professional work, and the work of other professionals.

Webinar: Going Green – Lighting Design for Horticulture
Feb 17 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

The future of food security in Canada is in greenhouses and vertical farms – controlled environments where unseasonable weather is not a concern. There are 17 million square meters of greenhouses in Ontario alone, where supplemental electric lighting at up to 50 watts per square meter provide ample opportunities for horticultural lighting design.

The challenge for professional lighting designers is to effectively communicate with the client, including horticulturalists, farmers, and greenhouse and vertical farm operators. Concepts such as photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), photoperiods, long- and short-day plants, and daily light integrals (DLI) are easy to master, but there is much more. Photomorphogenesis, phototropism, shade avoidance, secondary metabolites, and circadian rhythms are dependent on ultraviolet radiation and visible light from 280 to 800 nm.

Equally useful, professional lighting designers are familiar with climate-based daylight modeling for architectural design. We have the lighting design software tools to predict daylight availability in greenhouses on an hourly basis. With this, we can calculate how much supplemental electric lighting will be needed and how much it will cost to operate throughout the year. In short, our expertise brings considerable value to horticultural lighting design.

Ian AshdownPRESENTER: Ian Ashdown, P. Eng. (Ret.), FIES
Ian Ashdown is Senior Scientist for SunTracker Technologies Ltd. He holds over 150 patents and patent applications related to lighting design and research, and is responsible for the photometric calculation and architectural visualization engines of Lighting Analysts’ AGi32 and ElumTools lighting design software products. He is also Chair of the IES Horticultural Lighting Committee. He is currently developing electric lighting and daylighting design software tools expressly for greenhouses and vertical farms.

Webinar: Lighting for Circadian Health
Jun 16 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

‘One day we will look at our current lighting, the way we look at smoking now’ – Tony Tjan, Cue Ball Capital.

In the West we have the good fortune of having access to clean drinking water. We take it for granted that when we switch on our faucets, we will be able to use the water and it will be good for our bodies. We trust that the best practices have been employed in the delivery of our water.

Before we knew the importance of clean drinking water, we did not have filtration systems. Water filtration has been responsible for decreasing mortality rates and increasing the average life expectancy of the global population.

Lighting is the singular most important cue to the sleep/wake cycle, which determines the function of every organ in our body, including hormone and chemical secretion. Light is therefore responsible for our mood, physical health and cognitive health, for no other reason, than all living organisms evolved under sunlight, which is dynamic, over millions of years.

The World Health Organization has determined that chronic circadian rhythm disruption is a carcinogenic. Alzheimer’s has been linked to beta-amyloid build up in the brain, something that cannot drain without sleep, and PTSD sufferers are able to improve sleep by increasing sunlight exposure.

There are now thousands of papers to support the need for lighting that emulates sunlight. Simple…..and as with anything simple, the solution is complex.

Learn in this presentation about:

  1. The anatomy of the human eye and how to discern the functional differences between the receptors, with an emphasis on the recently discovered ipRGCs.
  2. Discover what we know today, about how sunlight affects the human body’s circadian rhythms.
  3. Learn about how disruption in our circadian rhythm can negatively affect sleep, immune response and productivity.
  4. Learn about standards and strategies designed to support human health and circadian entrainment.

Webinar: Staving for Darkness; How Exterior Lighting Impacts Wildlife
Jan 19 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Starving for Darkness

Since the industrial revolution and the invention of the electric light bulb, the natural ecosystems of the Earth spend more and more time bathed in artificial light within a 24-hour cycle. How does the artificial light and lack of darkness impact wildlife? How does the obstruction of the night’s sky affect bird migration, pollination, and reproduction?

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify exterior lighting conditions that can be harmful to wildlife.
  2. Look at existing case studies and projects that have caused harm to wildlife.
  3. Understand existing lighting regulations and how these can support wildlife, and what can be done to improve existing standards.
  4. To look at existing case studies and projects that have been designed for the wellbeing of wildlife habitats and the environment.
